Less than 30 minutes from the downtown district, San Francisco International Airport (SFO) lies on the southern side of the city, next to the bay.

San Francisco Airport is simple to reach from many directions, being located off Highway US-101 (James Lick Freeway / Bayshore Freeway) and close to the I-280 interstate (Junipero Serra Freeway) and the I-380.

The airport is situated near to a number of noteworthy suburbs, which include South San Francisco to the north, San Bruno and Millbrae to the west, and Burlingame and Hillsborough to the south.


Directions to San Francisco International Airport (SFO) from north:

• Take the Highway US-101 and head in a southerly direction
• Take the signed airport exit
• For car rental, exit at San Bruno Avenue
• For long-term car parking, exit San Bruno Avenue
• For short-term car parking, take the main airport exit

Directions to San Francisco International Airport (SFO) from south San Francisco (Palo Alto / San Jose)

• Take the Highway US-101 and head in a northerly direction
• Take the signed airport exit
• For car rental, exit at San Bruno Avenue
• For long-term car parking, exit San Bruno Avenue
• For short-term car parking, take the main airport exit

Directions from the car rental center to Highway US-101

• Turn right and head down McDonnell Road
• Turn left and head down San Bruno Avenue
• Join Highway US-101 and travel in a northerly direction towards San Francisco
• Join Highway US-101 and head south towards Palo Alto and San Jose

• Turn right and head down McDonnell Road
• Turn left and head down San Bruno Avenue
• Join Highway US-101 and travel in a southerly direction towards San Francisco
• Take the exit signposted for the airport
